1. Them people that want to buy alcohol but have no ID, you aren't going to get served if you have no ID and look under the age of 25. Please don't shout at me I'm only doing my job
2. I've worked there that long I've now memorized the crappy playlist and the announcements on the tannoy word for word and the exact time it is when and they're announced
3. Watching a customer dump their bag of potatoes on the isle where the cereal is. Like you have to be kidding me? When you're on your way to the checkouts you will pass the potatoes surely you can take them back yourself. The potatoes aren't even on the same department as me and I now have to
4. If you drop your carton of milk or box of eggs on the floor please come and find me so I can clean it up so someone doesn't hurt themselves don't just walk away and leave me to find it
5. And don't dump your half eaten sandwich or chewed chewing gum on the shelf, it's disgusting, there's a bin right outside of the store, you can't miss it. True story I've once had to clean smeared shit of the shelf. Just don't do it please, for my health
6. My knickers turn from briefs into a thong in less that 20 seconds every 20 seconds. And I have to awkwardly delve right in to pull it out, bet the security guard gets a right good laugh. It's the pants fault
7. Every Friday or Saturday night and 15 year olds come in causing trouble and ask silly questions like "Have you seen my mate? Phil McCrackin?" Heard them all
8. Being surrounded by food up until my break but still not knowing what to eat
9. Being too warm throughout summer because the air con isn't switched on
10. When the Christmas Playlist makes an appearance
Whats your biggest pet hate about retail?
My pet hate is the rude customers! I always try my best to be really friendly and smiley (to mask the hatred of my job) but still I'm met with grunts instead of replies. Some people don't even say thank you!!! It honestly drives me mental!
ReplyDeleteI agree! I hate having to be nice back even if they're horrible because out of work if anyone was rude I wouldn't stand for it :/ x
DeleteI loved this post and it's so true! I always try to be really good shopping because I know it's hard work! On the other hand rude staff pisses me off so much! Just chatting away to their pals, I have had a go at a few because I'm trying to pay and they don't care hahah :')

I totally agree with you here! I'm never rude to customers so when I'm not in work and they're chatting away to other colleagues instead of focusing on me like they should be i'm left like "helloooo I want to pay for my shopping now" haha x
DeleteOmg this sounds so bad! I've never worked in a supermarket before and I don't know if I ever could! This post made me laugh but I do feel sorry for you xx
ReplyDeleteThrifty vintage fashion
Its not all bad, I love the elderly that come in just to chat to me, it absolutely makes my day :) xx
DeleteHaha, I also have pet hates about my part-time in retail. I can't share the ones that are about food, as I work in a speciality shop, but I know what you mean when customers just dump or leave things where they shouldn't. People also try things without caring there are testers provided. Who want's something that's opened or half-used? Luckily, most of my customers are very nice and polite people, working in a super market sounds like a battle field.

That's so annoying when I go to buy something and it's been opened and it's like the last one! It just takes a lot of patience which sometimes I really don't have, I don't get as half as the people on checkouts do so I'm very lucky but recently I've noticed more rude customers x
DeleteI have never worked in retail before but all these seem so frustrating! x

There's negatives but there's positives to it aswell like the cute customers and the laughs I've had. I may do a post about the things I like about working in a super market too x
DeleteI work in retail and I can relate to this more than any other post!!

It's so frustrating sometimes x
DeleteSuch an eye opener on what retail staff have to do, however I still think some use this as an excuse to be rude haha;).
ReplyDeleteFab post!

People either just don't realise how much crap we have to put up with even when we're already feeling shitty and we still go in work and have all that thrown at us or they just don't care. Thankyou Charlotte! xx
DeleteLol! I worked in a supermarket (very briefly) last year and I can relate to every single one of these. My worst one was on the tills, people sneeze into their hands and then proceed to hand you money, or they cough and don't cover their mouth. It's like I DON'T WANT YOUR COLD. PLZ MOVE. Also the amount of bananas that are thrown in the bin is ridiculous, just because it's 'bruised'. I would still eat it! or make banana bread, but noooooo.
ReplyDeleteI think if I ever worked in retail again it would be in a clothes shop not a supermarket!

I'm the same! I'd like to see what it's like in a clothes shop, maybe just as annoying, you can't please everyone xx
DeleteOh god... the Christmas music. I enjoy it, but when they play one CD for the entire day and your eight hour shift... ahh! Drives me insane. Customers are a strange thing. Like, why do you suddenly find everything difficult because you're in public??? This is an accurate and rage-inducing post! XOXO

Somebody gets me! I can't stand Christmas music now because of work, I use to really love it. i'm so glad this year I won't have to put up with it xx
DeleteI used to work on one of the higher-end brands in a department store. One of my duties was to keep the shelves of folded jumpers tidy - you have no idea how annoying it is to watch people pick up the one you have JUST folded. Then look at the one under it. Then the one under that. They are EXACTLY the same. Argh! x
